White House corrects itself after transcript puts Jerusalem in Israel

The White House corrected itself Friday after it initially sent out a version of President Obama’s remarks at the funeral of former Israel President Shimon Peres listing Jerusalem as being in Israel.

Peres’ funeral took place at Mount Herzl, Israel’s national cemetery in Jerusalem.

But while Israel considers Jerusalem its capital, it has been U.S. policy since 1967 that the status of Jerusalem is an issue to be resolved between Israel and Palestine. Therefore the U.S. does not recognize any nation’s sovereignty over Jerusalem.

The White House press office transcript  of the remarks listed the location as “Jerusalem, Israel.” But Friday evening the White House corrected itself listing simply “Jerusalem” and crossing out “Israel” on the location.
